crack! 2010 (HATE + LOVE)

Crack!, indipendent international comic Festival is back for the sixth time, held as usual in the dungeons of Forte Prenestino, Roma, from June 17th to 20th. Theme of the year is HATE + LOVE (watch “Interference“, my personal rendition on the subject). Below are some of the flyers.

Below, a brief interview on Crack! philosophy (in italian).

Polymerase Chain Reaction

Nano Clips

Watch NANO CLIPS, a Youtube channel where you can see how to handle objects of micrometric scale.  Something similar happens in the animation I’m working on [13].

Superposition, Decoherence, Entanglement

Quantum computing is no more an academic speculation [12].

Dwarf Planets

In 2006, after the discover of a “tenth planet”, the International Astronomical Union decided to rewiev the concept of planet. According to the resolution, Pluto has been downgraded to the rank of Dwarf Planet, along with Ceres, Eris, Makemake and Haumea. From 200 to 2000 dwarf planets are expected to be found outside Neptune’s orbit. In my story, a dwarf planet threatens Earth [3]. In search for a name, I found “Nestis” (from a fragment of Empedocles), alleged nickname of Persephone, Queen of the Dead, or Iron Queen, according to Odysseus.

Inspiration

First source of inspiration is “Fantastic Voyage”, the 1966 film where a submarine crew is shrinked and injected into a human body. I particulary love the scene in wich Pleasence is ingested by the white blood cell. I know that Cameron is planning a remake, maybe after a pair of Avatar clones. Unfortunately I’ve missed the animated sequel (1968) and Joe Dante’s “Innerspace” (1987). For oversized and undersized aliens, check also Voltaire’s “Micromégas”, written in 1752, and “Pictures can’t lie”, by Katherine MacLean (1955).

Pazzia.org

Alessio Spataro is a very talented cartoonist, comic journalist and author of sarcastic pamphlets against the pope, Mr. Berlusconi and others.

Above are some portraits of his scooter, customized in the colors of italian police (POLIZIA). PAZZIA means crazyness.

THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE + ZEITGEIST

http://www.atheist-experience.com -Thank God folks like these exist on line! The atheist experience broadcasts tv and podcast conferences concerning a wide range of religious, scientific and socio-cultural arguments. It is a place where an atheist feels at home! (Atheist Eve comics are by Tracie Harris).

http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com -“Zeitgeist, produced by Peter Joseph, was created as a nonprofit filmic expression to inspire people to start looking at the world from a more critical perspective and to understand that very often things are not what the population at large think they are. The information in Zeitgeist was established over a year long period of research and the current Source page on this site lists the basic sources used / referenced and the Interactive Transcript includes exact source references and further information.”

By the way, if you live in Italy and wish to be de-baptized, download this form (source is UAAR, Union of the Atheist and Agnostic Rationalists), fill it and send it to the church where they first washed away your original sin. Your decision to be excluded from the christian community will be transcribed on the baptism log book.

The Boomers

http://myspace.com/boomersband -The band lined up in 2004, Rome – Italy, around vocalist and guitar player Marco (ex Overlord) and drummer Fausto (ex Manimal), two animators of the Roman punk’n’roll scene between the 80’s and the 90’s. The duo was joined by Alessandro (Fight like a brave and Fumo passivo), young and eclectic guitar player from Alghero, and decided to remain a trio without bass guitar…The band has just finished to record his first CD with 11 originals and 2 covers: “Glad to see you go” as a dutiful tribute to the Ramones and a very personal version of Doors’ “The end”.

“Halfway between the junkyard of comedy and cock rock, peppered with Italian pop sensibility, sweet riffing and awesome accents, we give you the first ever Ether selection from Rome. Enter The Boomers. Suckingly, there’s only two songs up on their page, but they are fairly amazing, borderline classic tracks… oh yeah, and they both end with “Man”, man. “The Conquer Man” is a mix between the sing-song brilliance of Claypool’s Primus and the best Hives track ever recorded. And “The Second Coming Man”, if you can believe it, is about one part Johnny Cash and another ZZ Top Italia, but please… don’t listen to my retarded comparisons, just check out The Boomers. (Again: the killer logos do not let up.)” (http://ligulate.blogspot.com/)
